Marc's Garden Blog

Follow along in our garden for 2010.

Welcome to my garden blog for the year 2010

I haven't grown a garden in years. Talking with my brother Micah this past Christmas has given me the gardening bug. I am looking forward to growing a garden this year and can't wait to taste food that hasn't been treated with a bunch of chemicals. I will be blogging my progress so my brother can keep up with me.
Thanks for visiting.

Let The Adventure Begin!

Hello,

I started my garden today. Well, I guess I actually started it last night. I bought some seeds and 2 bags of  seed starting mix.

Here’s what I bought.

Soil

2 bags of Jiffy Organic Seed Starting Mix

Packs of Organic Seeds

2 Sweet Corn, 1 Crookneck Yellow Squash, 1 Okra, 1 Carrot,

1 Cucumber, 2 Broccoli, 1 Cauliflower, 1 Beefsteak Tomato, 1 Rutgers Tomato, 1 Cantaloupe, 1 Watermelon

Packs of Non-Organic Seeds

1 Pole Bean, 1 Snow Pea, 2 Marigold

Now my brother wants me to just plant organic, but he’s just gonna have to understand, I haven’t done this in years and for me to even be trying to start gardening again is a huge step. So, if you see him, tell him to take it easy on me. LOL :-)

I will be doing a raised bed garden this year. I plan on getting the lumber for the beds at local construction sites that have thrown away good pieces of lumber. Micah told me I better be careful or folks will start calling me hippie, tree-hugger, or worse yet, Democrat. 8-O LOL Now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are. LOL I told him I’m not a hippie, just broke. LOL Sounds like a good idea for a bumper sticker to me. LOL

I will be using water bottles to start my plants. I started drinking just water on January 1 of this year and I will be using the empty bottles. I will try and get some pictures up so you can see how I’m using them.

Just this evening I started. I planted 10 bottles. 3 of each tomato, 2 lettuce, and 1 each of cauliflower and broccoli. My plan is to start this many each week so I can plant a staggered crop so we can hopefully eat straight out of the garden all year.

I stopped by the library and picked up 4 books.

“Gardening In The South”, “Month-By-Month Gardening In The South” – Don Hastings

“All New Square Foot Gardening” – Mel Bartholomew

“Grow Vegetables” – Alan Buckingham, Jo Whittingham, (consultant)

Like I said, I am really looking forward to this year in my garden.

Have a Super Day,

Marc
